Skye
I wake to see the sliver of moonlight peeking through the small arched window. I roll over to face away from it, but end up on the floor. What time is it? It seems pretty late.
I lift my head and groan. The taunting moon shines through, staring, laughing. I can’t be bothered to get up. My limbs ache after all that hunting yesterday, trying and failing to catch an injured rabbit. It would be easier if the woods weren’t as crowded. Or alive.
I stretch my arm out to try and seek out the fluffy ball of black fur that is Shadow. When my arm comes in contact with his head, he gives an indignant meow.
“Don’t get all stroppy with me, mate.” I scold. He begins to apologise, with small mews and kitty noises, but is interrupted by a shuffling outside. I hear hushed voices
What?
I’m the only one on this island, aren’t I? Well, that’s what I thought...
“Shut up, Ed!” A muffled voice hisses.
“I can’t help it Luce! It’s like the whole woods is out to get me!”
“You’d better help it.” ‘Luce’ replies icily.
“H-H-Hello? Who’s there?” I stuttered from under the bed.
“Did you hear that, Ed? Oh my biscuits! Go- go- go!!! Move your butt! Move it I said! Go!!” Gabbles the girl. Their voices trail into the distance of the forests. Soft fur brushes against my legs.
“That was strange... I thought I was the only human here” I say to Shadow. I try to sound casual, but my voice has a high, whiny sound to it when it comes out my mouth.
“Apparently not...” Shadow replies. Shadow is different. By different, I mean different.
“Oh, yes, I’ve been meaning to tell you, I found this one in the forest, lost in a goblin trap, poor thing.” I scoop up the tabby pom-pom creature and tickle its nose. It replies with a sneeze.
“Lovely.” I grimace sarcastically.
